a blog about geeky things and snippets of my life

so, my roomie and I have a mouse infestation in our apartment. I’m not sure how many we have, but it’s enough to keep us up at night! And no, it’s not because we leave food/crumbs everywhere. It’s just freaking Amsterdam. Mice are everywhere here. By the way, does anyone know why that is? Anywho, I have tried everything to get rid of them. Poison (doesnt work!), tried to convince my boss to let me borrow their cat(they wouldn’t let me!) traps with peanut butter-none of them worked! We did get one on a mouse trap by baiting it with potatoes that were cooked that same evening. These mice are picky! They don’t eat cheese or old food. It has to be freshly cooked stuff. These Dutch mice are hella smart too. Sometimes I set a trap and the bastards take the food without getting smashed! WTF mate!? So, today, I set a trap with a shrimp and noodle as bait. 30 minutes later I went to go check on it to make sure one of the mice didn’t steal the food. I look, and what do you know!? The mouse took the noodle! He didn’t eat the shrimp(are mice vegetarian?). I was just about to reset the trap when I heard/saw him. The mouse was still on the counter. I freaked out. I didn’t even know I could shriek as loud as I did. It was a continuous, loud, high pitched, one. I’m sure the neighbors heard. I screamed for Devynn to come look, but she is even more of a wuss than I am- so she was in the living room freaking out from the distance. I finally convinced her to come in and once she saw it she freaked out even more! He was stuck there! Under a little plate. I threw a towel over him and freaked out some more and asked Devynn what to do. She decided that we should put him in a plastic bag, take it outside, and let him free. Great idea! I got a knife(it was the closest utensil!)…to scoot him into the plastic bag. Just as I was about to scoot him, he ran! My reflexes kicked in and I just slammed the knife down…on his little hind leg. It was such a sad sight. He had to drag himself with his front legs into the plastic bag. I felt terrible and grabbed the bag and gave it to Devynn. She took it out to the curb. He’s probably out there with his broken hind leg, scooting around in the bag, that’s enclosed in another bag, and on the rough streets of Amsterdam south.

That’s my story. Devynn’s is here She cried. I didn’t, but I do feel bad! I even had to take a shower post murder!

I hoep PETA doesn’t spam me. It’s not like I did it on purpose! I was a vegetarian for 4 years. Surely that counts for something…right?

I’m not very big on Thanksgiving, but this year I am somewhat missing it. Or rather missing trying to avoid it. I usually spend my Thanksgivings trying to get out of the dinners, trips to relatives or whatever boyfriends dinner(those were dramatic!). The past 2 Thanksgivings I’ve been in Amsterdam, so I didn’t really have to avoid them. Kind of takes the fun out of it. My favorite “avoiding Thanksgiving” Thanksgiving was when I actually came home for Thanksgiving break, with a friend in tow, but didn’t tell any of my family I was in town. Ha! It was fun. I think I spent that day playing Mike Tyson’s Punch Out and at a bar. This year I am celebrating Thanksgiving, just not today. Saturday, I’m attending dinner at my friend Tony’s house. I can’t wait! I’ve been promised gumbo WITH OKRA! That’s my favorite food(okra), if you didn’t know.

Nothing else to report. I’m going to St. Moritz for December/January holidays. Holla!

I was going to wait until I got my brand new shiny computer to post, but Apple is taking forever to send it. Still love you though, Apple (hopefully that love will get them to send it quicker). I have noticed that without my computer, I’m a lot more open to doing other things besides playing Warcraft and stalking forums. I’ve been reading a lot more. My old before bed habit was to talk on skype with Aaron until I fell asleep, but now I have replaced it with reading and listening to some chill music. It’s pretty relaxing and I think I’ll continue the habit when I get my computer. Or at least i’ll try. (Sorry, Aaron!) I’ve been reading “The Brief Wondrous Love of Oscar Wao”. It’s a novel about an overweight ghetto nerd who dreams of becoming the Dominican J. R. R. Tolkien. It’s hilarious and heart warming. I love it and am almost done with it. I’m one of those people that reads several books at once. So, I also just started re-reading “Catcher in the Rye”. I read it years ago and found myself crushing on Holden Caulfield. A friend and I were talking about the book and she told me she hated Holden! It inspired me to re-read it and maybe fall in love again with Holden. Hehe. She’s going to re-read it afterwards and maybe her judgement of Holden will change. I just picked up “The Alchemist”. Everyone always talks about how great it is. I’m not usually a fan of “omg this book will change your life” books, but I am giving it a chance.

Without my computer I also find myself going out far too much! On days where I would usually just stay in and play WoW or Skype with friends, I now go out dancing until the wee hours of the night! Yea, it’s fun! But not for my wallet or my liver. :/

The Apple gods are looking down from above…or from California-wherever they are. Remember how I was just drooling over the brand new macbooks? Well, drool no more! I willl be the owner of one next week! Apple is replacing my old craptop! Pretty freaking sweet! Especially since my AppleCare expired 2 months ago. I’m really appreciative/excited that they chose this option instead of making me send my computer in yet again. Thanks Apple! I heart you!

bahahha, I was gonna use a lame title like “A Linkie from Pinkie” but I didn’t

Check out ghostsound! a music blog from my friend Bryan!

My laptop is acting up again! Yes, again. (remember when I had to fork out a pretty penny just a few months ago for a new motherboard and some extra stuffs!?) I know it’s time for an upgrade, but I am trying to hold out until the spring. You know? When I’m back in the states and won’t use every extra penny on travelling. But for now, hold on mac-y poo! I took her to the shop on Saturday morning. They looked at it and were confused! How can I be having motherboard problems so quickly after I just got a new one!? So, they kept her over the weekend. Got a call from the mac genius today and he said they couldn’t fix it, but that Apple will contact me about getting an exchange. Thanks Apple! I really am relieved that they aren’t just going to charge me again. Though, I am not too happy about having my harddrive wiped again! argh! Twice in the last 4 months! This will teach me to backup. Actually, it probably won’t, sadly.

Besides the apple issue I’ve been good! Well, not entirely good. I was sick with god knows what for 3 days. Something that had me in my bed for 2 days with fever and puking. It was gross and i’m glad its over. I saw Okkervil River Friday night with Kate and Robert. Amazing show. I wasn’t feeling very well at the show so I said as soon as they play my song, which by the way is Westfall, I am out. Of course my song was the very last song! haha! They delivered it beautifully. I was satisfied. The rest of the weekend was really fun. I miraculously felt better on Saturday and spent the day watchinging Real World with Devynn (I’m addicted!) and the nights partying. What?! It’s what I do! I also spent Sunday afternoon in the Van Gogh. Recievers of my postcards know that I go a lot and that everytime I go, I fall in love with a painting. This time-The freaking mound of potatoes. Dunno why. Just found it beautiful on Sunday.

potatoes!

potatoes!

That’s what all dutch kids have been singing for like a week now. why? In preparation of today, St Martin’s Day. St Martin’s day is celebrated in the evening of 11 November in Flanders, parts of the Netherlands – primarily the southern and north-western parts – and most areas of Germany and Austria.

Children go from door to door carrying paper lanterns and sing traditional songs about Sint Maarten to the householders in return for sweets and goodies, a custom which can be likened somewhat to the American tradition of ‘trick or treat’ at Halloween. I seriously just opened my door to 50+ kids(a group from the creche) singing and holding out bags. It was cute, but also scary as they were all knee height and pushing towards me for candy.

Do you know how hard it is to get out of bed when it’s rainy/gray/cold outside and you’re so snuggly under blankets, sheets, and in pajamas?

Freaking hard. Good Morning :/

My laptop is getting old! It’s time to upgrade. I really want one of the new macbooks.

*drools*
I think I’ll get one after I move back to the states. That’s right folks. I’m moving back to the states. Not sure when exactly. March or so. Why? well, I can’t stay here forever! You know laws and stuff. I was originally only supposed to stay here for a year. That was the plan. And here I am. Still here a year and a half later. I love Europe, specifically Amsterdam, and I plan on living here again in the future when I can have a proper job and a proper visa. So, the new plan is after my contract is over-go on a huge European tour by bus or train, go back to the states, work/save money while living with the mom (omg, can i do that!?), and nursing school in the fall. Somewhere. Probably Austin,TX because I can get instate tuition and hello?! I have a built in BFF already there.

*sigh* but my plans are ever changing so who knows!? haha

I’ve been knitting this past week. Working on a cranberry ribbed scarf for myself. Isn’t the color pretty?

Hopefully I can finish before Sunday so I can start on another project. Though I’m sure I won’t be paying any attention to knitting, or anything else for that matter, after Friday. Friday is the day when the new World of Warcraft expansion comes out! Wrath of the Lich King. Of course, I’m getting it and will be leveling both my characters to 80! And of course my professions. Can’t wait for the new content. *squeals*

Yesterday, I logged on to Warcraft to play. Only to realize that I had been kicked from my raiding guild! O.O

Why? I assume it’s because I missed the raid yesterday, BUT in my defense-I wasn’t confirmed for the raid AND I told them 4 hours before the raid that I wouldn’t be coming. Plenty of time to find a decent healer to replace me.

*sigh* Whatever. So, now I am on the look for a new guild. A guild that raids on European times on US servers. It’s going to be hard, but surely I can find one on a different server.
