I received a blog award from Rachel at Point Me to the Sky Above!

The Super Comments Award!

Now, like many of these awards, there are a few rules that go along with receiving it:

1.Thank person who nominated you.
2. Copy the award. Paste it in your blog.
3. Link to the person who gave me this award.
4. Answer the 10 questions that come with the award.
5. Nominate of few of your favorite bloggers for the award.

I’m passing the award to Amanda at Our Little Family, Kizzy at Kizzy Online, Mrs. Taylored Wife, and Wangari of Queen of my Playground.

And here are the ten questions!

1. Why do you blog? I enjoy it! Simple as that.

2. What are your 3 best memories? Hard question! First, a 4.5 hour train through Switzerland on the Glacier Express. My face was pressed against the window, mouth open, as I zigzagged in and out and over and under of the snow covered Alps. It was breathtaking. I remember at one point, going over a bridge, looking down and not being able to see the ground and then looking up and hardly being able to see the tops of the mountains! Second best is bungee jumping. Third is a crazy, fun, completely random, night I had out in Amsterdam with some friends.

3. If you had to change your real name what would you change it to? Neely or Naomi. I’ve always liked those names and whenever I need a fake name, those are the ones I use. I met a guy at a party years ago and while we were chatting he mentioned he could fix computers. I gave him my old ibook to fix and when he finished, I powered it on to find my computer renamed, “Neely’s Computer. I never changed it :)

4. What are five things you can’t live without? Iphone, Macbook, Peanut, Burt’s Bees chapstick, and tea (earl grey, please!)

5. What are the 4 best books you’ve ever read? The Bell Jar, Confederacy of DUnces, The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, and Bare.

6. Tell me something unique and interesting about yourself. My joints are weird and my legs can bend in a million different ways >.< It grosses people out

7. What do you love best about yourself? My outgoing personality. It has saved me

8. What is the best movie ever made? one!? I can’t possibly choose just one! Here are a few best movies ever made-The Professional, The Life Aquatic, The Pianist

9. If you had a “freaky friday” experience who would you trade places with and why? Probably that guy from Man Vs. Food. What a kick ass job. lol

10. What’s the best part about being a woman?BOOBS!

A month or so ago I switched blogs with Amber of 2nutsinashell . We both answered a few fun questions for each other’s readers. I enjoyed answering them and reading hers so much, that I wanted to share my answers with you and I want you to answer them too. You don’t have too, but it would be nice :)

What made you start blogging?
I’ve always written in some way or another. I have about 30 hand written journals and diaries from age 8 to present! So blogging just came naturally. I started in 2001 on livejournal and haven’t stopped since!

What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an alligator, but since that dream was crushed in 1st grade (darn you, Mrs. Mitchell), I decided I wanted to be a veterinarian. Oh how things have changed! I went to school for Journalism and now I’m planning on going back to school to be a nurse.

What’s one thing you wish people did better?
I wish people would clean/pick up behind themselves. I am constantly disgusted with the way people treat the environment. I hate seeing someone throw a wrapper out of their car on a highway or dump trash at the end of a street. Ew…and don’t get me started with public bathrooms! *barf*

If you could gorge yourself at any restaurant or on any food, where/what would it be?
Huey’s Cheese Fries! Huey’s is a chain in Memphis, TN with the best burgers and amaaazing cheese fries topped with bacon bits, chives, and a side of sour cream. So bad for you, but delicious.

What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?
People may be surprised to know that I was a model from age 16 to a couple of years ago. Nothing professional (I wasn’t in vogue or anything :P), but I’ve been in tons of runway shows, commercial modeling for brochures, promotional events, photo shoots and I’ve even had a photo spread in a national magazine (Boycrazy! some teen magazine about hot boys. My pic was attached to an article about staying friends with your ex).

K. Your turn!

I got a blog award. A really cool one awarding my geekiness! TADA!

The Geek Girls Unite Award

Thanks, Rachel of Point Me to the Sky Above! ^_^

Here are the rules:
List ten geeky facts about yourself and Pass this award onto your favorite female geeks!

1. I used to role play. Not the hot and sexy I’m a nurse and you’re my patient role play. The I’m an elf and you’re a knight role play. Unfortunately, I didn’t know anyone in real life that would want to participate so I did it online. I roleplayed in an anime chat room as a cat/human hybrid girl for a couple of years. Haha! And this year I’m going to cosplay (costume play) at NYC comic con! I’ll tell you who I’m going as when it gets closer!

2. I looooove comic books and graphic novels. I usually stop by my local comic book store every Wednesday (new comic book day!) to pick up new releases and say hi to the old guy that works there.

3. I’m a complete World of Warcraft nerd. I have phases when I don’t play at all, but I also have phases when all I do is play :P I’ve been playing on and off since 2005. I have 3 “main” characters. A 80 holy/disc and sometimes shadow night elf priest, a 74 draenei fire mage, a 73 human warlock with an ever changing spec. During vanilla WoW (wow before any expansion) I raided as a mage, in BC as a warlock, and in wrath as a priest. The new expansion comes out this year and I think I’m going to stick with my priest!

4. I’ve written fan-fic. >.< "Fan Fiction" is fiction based on a television series, book, or video game written by fans. I wrote tons of fan fiction about my favorite characters in Sailor Moon and from a book series by L.J. Smith called Night World. I still have them at my mom's house.

5. My favorite board games are Scrabble and Munchkin-a Dungeon adventure, role playing card game. I can't get enough of it!

6. I can read 1337! :P Can't write it, but I can read it.

7.In the series Firefly (R.I.P.) the characters curse in Mandarin Chinese. They speak English the entire episode and when they get angry or upset, out pops a Mandarin Chinese curse word! I thought it was cool and researched some of the things they said and use it when I get upset.
Chur ni-duh means screw you! one of my faves

8.I get super excited when a new operating system comes out. When Snow Leopard came out for Mac, I was excited and bought it the same day!

9.

I had a geocities page back in the day. It doesn’t exist anymore, but it was www.geocities.com/stellar_sophia and it was lame. Ever since then I’ve been blogging. At Star320 from ages 18-20, Simply Sophia from 20-23, Lophy from 23-25, and I’ve been here at PinkieLarue since then!

10. Helllooo?! I got an award!

I pass this award to the geeky Magda at Fabgeekling!, Amy at Geek With Curves, and Michelle at Desultory Diversions

One of my favorite blogs recently had their site wiped clean! All of their blog posts, comments, everything!!!! And they have no way of restoring it. :( Instead of sulking, they said “shit happens!” and rebuilt a new site. Make sure you check out the beautiful and talented, Shannon and Andrea (yup…Hazel from Degrassi!) at ThoseGirlsAreWild! They write on everything-current events, celeb gossip, sex, beauty/hair, new music, relationships, and my favorite-their videos! They do hilaaaarious skits and topic of the week videos. Here are a few of my favorites!

Wild Girls on Turn Offs

Wild Girls “how do you do those dances?” (this one cracks me up. I definitely am always confused at the current dances while my sister just sees it and does it. I never get it!)

Oh and this one! A spoof of Beyonce’s “Sweet Dream” about their lack of internet.

and they also talk about important current events. here’s a video on Health Care Reform

Sorry for spamming you with videos! Just wanted to share them with you! Hope you enjoy and definitely subscribe to their blog!

I participated in 20somethingbloggers 7th blogswap. It’s an event that matches, at random, one blogger with another to switch blogs for a single post. I was paired and swapped blogs with the creative, crafty, Amber, from 2nutsinashell. It was such a treat working with her. Here’s a short interview, followed by her guest post. Enjoy and don’t forget to visit her over at 2nutsinashell!

1. What made you start blogging?
Honestly, I have no idea! I’ve been writing since the 7th grade–mostly short stories. I even have another blog called The Escritoire where I feature some of them. I think I was just looking for another way to write and blogging about our day to day life seemed to guarentee no writer’s block! Over the few years it’s gone from a vintage fashion and lifestyle blog to a DIY decor blog. Whatever I’m currently into is what my blog’s into.

2. What did you want to be when you grew up?
Married. That was the answer I gave grown-ups and teachers alike. I’m sure they all worried about the anti-feminist undertones my dream “job” had to it, but growing up and being a wife was all I wanted! My husband and I have been married for four years now and it’s still my dream “job.”

3. What’s one thing you wish people did better?
Opened their minds. I wish people were more imaginative and more accepting. I think if everyone had an open mind to the world around them a lot of problems would cease to exist.

4. If you could gorge yourself at any restaurant or on any food, where/what would it be?
Joe’s Crab Shack and their BBQ dungeness crab. I looooove seafood. And they use some sort of spice on their crab that just makes it amazing. Kind of like Old Bay seasoning, but even better! A side of drawn butter and ooh! Heavenly!

5. What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?
I’m a little on the superstitious side. No so much black cats and rabbits feet, but like, I don’t play with Ouija boards and I don’t scoff at Indian or Egyptian or other cultural “spells” and the likes. There are things that I just can’t definitively say don’t exist, so I just leave them alone.

Now, on with the post!

Hey there! First I want to thank Sophia for allowing this little housewife the chance to guest post on her highly technical blog! I’m Amber and I write a blog called “Two Nuts in a Shell.” It’s basically the ins and outs of what I do with my spare time as a Marine wife. My husband and I have been married for 4 years now, and he’s what you call a lifer. And not just a 20-year lifer. We’re talking 30-35 years he wants to be a Marine (so we’ve got at least another 20 years ahead of us). Last year we moved 4 times in the span of 12 months. Needless to say, because of this I’ve learned several things when it comes to managing a house on both a strict budget and some very strict space issues (have you ever seen some of the housing on the older bases?). But mostly I abide by 3 simple rules:

1. It doesn’t have to be expensive to look expensive.
2. When it comes to redecorating, paint is your best friend.
3. The happiest people don’t have the best of everything; they make the best of everything they have.
But enough philosophizing! Let’s get down to some crafting!

Add Some Flair to Your Bookcases

You no longer have to stare at that ugly particle board backing that comes with your bookcase. I’ve seen this done with contact paper, wall paper, and even the bead board wall paper you can find at places like Home Depot. This method, uses wrapping paper.

Supplies:
Bookcase backing
Wrapping paper of your choice (I used Martha Stewart wrapping paper in “Granny Smith-Pea Shoot”)
Spray adhesive
A towel or drop cloth
Hot glue gun
Books or other heavy objects to hold your wrapping paper in place
Xacto knife

Start by laying out the back of your bookcase. In case there’s any question about what we’re working with here, this is what it should look like:

Okay? We’re clear? Good. You can skip this step if you want to, but I find it helps. Unwrap your wrapping paper. If it’s already cut into separate sheets, so much the better for you! If it’s not, you’ll have to do some measuring and cutting here. Using your books, lay out the wrapping paper and anchor the ends so that it has time to relax–working with the paper while it’s still too tightly wound is just a pain!

(Why yes, I do happen to have duplicate copies of the Twilight series! ;) One belongs to my sister.)

You may or may not be able to tell, but I used three sheets of the Martha Stewart paper. They were almost the exact perfect size for my backing with very little trimming needed.

Once the paper has had time to loosen up, you can start spraying. Lay out your towel or drop cloth first, because spray adhesive gets everywhere no matter how careful you try to be!

Work in layers (if you have individual sheets) for the easiest execution. Keep one end of your paper anchored with books while you lift the other side and spray the underside of the paper. Sorry there’s no photo of this–both my hands were kind of busy! ;)

Once you get a good coating on there (don’t saturate the paper!) smooth out, pressing firmly into the back of the bookcase. Smooth out all the air bubbles and anchor again with your books.

Repeat for the other side.

Repeat for each layer, anchoring with books all the way around.

You don’t need to wait for the adhesive to dry before starting the next step. Let your glue gun heat up nice and hot. Working around the edges, glue the paper to the back of the bookcase. I used an extra book to smooth and press the glue out because it was so hot to the touch, even through the paper. This step is important even though it seems redundant. The spray adhesive doesn’t create a strong enough bond between the wrapping paper and the paper particle board, which is why the hot glue is necessary.

Now, let everything dry thoroughly.

Once your piece is dry, you can use your Xacto knife to trim off any excess paper that hangs over your backing.

Put your backing on your bookcase and voila!

You’ve just given that store bought bookcase a face lift and some much needed personality! I couldn’t believe how this one little thing took our bookcases from looking “study serious” to “bright and light” in a few easy steps.

And just because I can’t get over that gorgeous paper, here’s a nice close up of those yummy colors!

You can see more of this project at Two Nuts in a Shell in this post, and the final results in this post. Thanks so much to Pinkie Larue for having me! I’ll see you on the blogosphere!

I got a blog award! From two bloggers! Goooooo, me!

There’s a blog challenge that a lot of 20 something bloggers are participating in. It’s “The Best of 2009 Challenge“. Basically it’s reflecting on your 2009, with a writing prompt for each day. There’s no way, I am going to post every day. I’ve tried and failed (remember NaBloPoMo?). However, I will write on a few prompts each week!

What was your best trip in 2009?- Florence, Italy! It was my first trip of the year! I actually spent my New Year’s Eve here. I was completely alone for this trip, but had a blast. I enjoyed exploring the city, visiting museums, getting lost, seeing beaaaautiful sites, running from Italian men, and eating lots of pizza! I stayed in a really cool hostel, met some fun people, and also met the most beautiful man I’ve ever laid eyes on in my entire life-Francesco.

Restaurant moment. Share the best restaurant experience you had this year. Cheese Fries at Huey’s! The day I moved back to the states, I had the food I missed the most while I was away-Huey’s Cheese Fries. mmmmmmmm!

What book – fiction or non – touched you? Where were you when you read it? Have you bought and given away multiple copies? The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. I borrowed it from my boss and read it in two nights. I loved it and even though I haven’t given away copies, I definitely recommend it to everyone.

Night out. Did you have a night out with friends or a loved one that rocked your world? Who was there? What was the highlight of the night? I had tons of fun nights this year. I can’t choose a favorite!

Blog find of the year. That gem of a blog you can’t believe you didn’t know about until this year. Color Me Katie! I love this blog. It’s full of really cool art and photographs. I never skip a post!

For the last couple of years, my friends both online and IRL, have participated in NaNoWriMo-National Novel Writing Month. It’s an event where the goal is too write a novel during the month of November. I’ve attempted it about 3 times, but I always stopped writing around the second week. I thought about doing it again this year, but I KNEW I wasn’t going to complete it so I didn’t even attempt. Instead I found something I will participate in! NaBloPoMo! National Blog Posting Month! I know, I know, I’m a day late. I’ll add in an extra post somewhere. The goal of this little deal is to just post a blog post every day. I know I’ve been a little sporadic with my blog posts, so I’m hopinh this will help me blog more regularly…or I’ll fail at this too. :/ Anyway, I’m going to try to post daily even if it just a picture from my iphone!

Two of my friends have started new blogs. They aren’t new to the blogging world, they’ve just started new blogs. Check them out!

Roxy Monoxide’s blog on being single and living in Memphis.

Your BF’s blog on fashion, music, beauty, entertainment and more!

I love these ladies and you should too
